We all know that cooking more meals at home is good for you, but it can be hard to stick with this habit if you’re not inspired by your kitchen. 

Pantry Staples to Always Have on Hand

1. Plan out your meals for the week

2. Make a list of what you need to buy for each meal 

3. Check your pantry and fridge before shopping so you know what’s already on hand 

4. Shop at different stores or online to get the best deals 

5. Take advantage of coupons when they are available

6. Use bulk bins to save money when there is an item that you use often in large quantities (e.g., rice, oats)

What does a basic pantry have in it:

  • flour
  • baking powder
  • baking soda
  • yeast (there are so many easy bread to make out there)
  • cornmeal
  • Oatmeal
  • sugar
  • Cooking oils

Canned goods: What do you like?

  • tomatoes
  • vegetables
  • fruit
  • tinned meats like tuna, sardines, chicken
  • canned beans
  • canned pasta

I enjoy keeping a few easy staples too but I only buy them if they’re really cheap.

When I find things on sale, I buy a case. That’s how you build up a pantry. Buy a case, use one or two. Next time it’s on sale, buy another case. Rotate your shelf.

With basics, you can make a meal. It may not be the fanciest meal, but you can make one.

I’ve been doing this my whole life and have never run out of food since I was 18.. and even then I had popcorn and macaroni.

I also keep dried mushrooms, dried peppers, dried tomatoes. These are more expensive though.

Buy coffee when they’re on sale, I buy when they are BOGO deals and buy alot.

Same with teas, whatever it is you use every day.

I keep a huge variety of spices and seasonings, both savory and sweet.

The basics are:

  • cinnamon
  • pepper
  • salt
  • basil leaves
  • garlic
  • onion powder
  • cumin

Adding Chinese 5 spices and a curry mix gives you even more options, and they last a long time.

Myself, I have at least a year’s worth of food. That didn’t happen overnight. I’ve built that up over the past year.

I also keep a variety of relishes, pickles, sauces, condiments including mayo and such. It can add a lot to a dish. You can make a lot from blending a little bit of this and that. A dash of relish to a salad dressing, pasta salad or meatloaf really gives it flavor.

The basics are usually

  • ketchup
  • mustard
  • soy sauce
  • Worcestershire
  • mayo
  • vinegar

I love chili sauces and the kids enjoy hot sauces too.

As you build your pantry, you’ll be able to grab things you know you use when they’re on sale.

I do keep a few jams and jellies, marmalades.

Dried fruits help are a great snack and keep well.

Raisins are a staple, dried cranberries jazz up oatmeal, muffins, and bread.

Same with nuts they are great additions to desserts and is a great snack option.

Adjust these basics to your own tastes and needs.

How much you need of any one item will depend on the size of your family and how often you cook. For example, we are a family of 7 who cooks 1-3 times a week and we go through 1 bottle of garlic or onion powder every other month. We do try to cook in bulk, making large batches of food to portion out and freeze it.
